Self Sabotage
Self Sabotage By Dr. Claire Muselman Self-Sabotage: Understanding and Overcoming Self-Defeating Behaviors Procrastination, screen addiction, hitting snooze—sound familiar? These are just a few examples of self-sabotage, a pattern of behavior where we hinder our success and undermine our goals. But why do we do this, and more importantly, how can we stop? Recognizing Self-Sabotage Self-sabotage can be challenging to identify. It often masquerades as harmless habits or necessary distractions. But at its core, it is a destructive pattern that can significantly impact our lives. Let us dive into some common forms of self-sabotage: Addicted to Screens: Whether it is endless scrolling on social media or binge-watching TV shows, screen addiction is a common form of self-sabotage. It numbs us and distracts us from productive activities. Hitting Snooze: Repeatedly hitting the snooze button is a way of breaking promises to ourselves. It disrupts our sleep cycle and sets a tone of unreliability for the day. Checking Your Phone First Thing in the Morning: This habit can overload your brain with information and set a tone of distraction for the entire day. Checking Your Phone/Email Over & Over: This habit can continue to overload your brain with information, keeping you out of the present moment. The only time of space you have to be happy is right now. Being Late: Chronic lateness can be a subconscious way of avoiding responsibilities or creating a situation where we can escape consequences. Going to Bed Super Late: Known as “revenge bedtime procrastination,” staying up late can reclaim personal time, but it often leads to sleep deprivation and a host of health problems. Understanding the ‘Why’ Behind Self-Sabotage To overcome self-sabotage, we need to understand the root causes. Often, these behaviors stem from deeper issues like fear of failure, fear of success, or feelings of unworthiness. Reflecting on your habits and asking tough questions can help you understand why you sabotage yourself. Questions for Self-Reflection Are you happy with your current life outcomes? Does your behavior align with your goals? If not, what is stopping you from taking action? Do you feel discomfort or unease when you progress? Why? Is your fear based on others’ opinions, fear of failure, or success? Do you have a fixed or growth mindset? Overcoming Self-Sabotage Once you have identified your self-sabotaging behaviors and their causes, the next step is to actively work towards changing them. Change might include: Setting clear and achievable goals. Breaking tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Seeking support from mentors, therapists, or support groups. Practicing mindfulness and self-compassion. Developing a healthier relationship with failure and understanding it as a stepping stone to success. Embrace Change for a Better You Self-sabotage does not have to define your life. By recognizing these patterns and understanding their roots, you can start to make positive changes. Positive change is about breaking free from the chains of self-defeat and stepping into a more productive, fulfilling life. Remember, the first step towards change is awareness, followed by action. Start today, and watch how you transform your life for the better. Related Posts
That’s Cute Sweetheart
That’s Cute Sweetheart By Dr. Claire Muselman That’s Cute, Sweetheart: Navigating and Challenging Gender Stereotypes in the Workplace In the evolving landscape of the modern workplace, women continue to break barriers, yet the journey is far from over. Despite the progress, women still face significant challenges, particularly in leadership roles. As of 2019, only 1% of women held CEO positions in the insurance industry, and only 8% of organizations had women’s leadership programs. This stark reality calls for a deeper look into our day-to-day interactions and how they shape the professional environment for women. Challenging “Emotional” Labels In my career, I have often defended my team with passion and conviction. However, this passion has sometimes been misconstrued as an emotional overreaction. During a meeting, when I was advocating for an injured worker, my male boss publicly called me out for being “emotional.” It was a crucial moment for me to stay calm and focused. The next day, I addressed this with my boss, clarifying that my approach was not emotional but passionate. This conversation helped reshape his perception and interaction with me, at least to my face. Dealing with Age and Gender Prejudices Another challenge I faced was the age and gender stereotypes. When I became the first female officer in an organization, I encountered surprising and inappropriate comments about my age and appearance. In these situations, it is essential to maintain professionalism, reaffirm your credentials, and redirect the conversation to your expertise and role. Shifting the conversation back to the topic at hand is effective. Rinse and repeat as needed. Combating “Women’s Work” Stereotypes Working on a project, a male colleague referred to some tasks as “women’s work.” It is critical to address such stereotypical remarks head-on. Asking for clarification can put the person on the spot, making them realize the inappropriateness of their comment. This approach challenges the stereotype and sets a standard for future interactions. See something, say something. Hear something, educate. Responding to Unprofessional Comments A remark about my appearance and age at an industry conference took me aback. In hindsight, the best response to such unprofessionalism is reintroducing yourself, maintaining your professional identity, and not allowing the conversation to devolve into personal judgments. There are times when these comments sting. You will get better and more rooted in your presence, returning with intelligent stances to defend yourself. Also, please step in to protect and support others if you ever see this happen to a fellow peer. Where Do We Go From Here? As women, we have the power and responsibility to support each other and share our experiences. It is not enough to acknowledge that these issues exist; we must actively work to change the narrative. Learning actionable responses and leading by example are vital in driving this change. We can be the game-changers, refusing to let outdated stereotypes and biases define our professional journeys. Join the Movement It is beyond time to challenge the status quo and support the growth and development of women in all industries. By sharing our stories and strategies, we can empower each other to rise to the occasion and create a more inclusive and respectful professional environment. The time is now. Start today. Join us in this vital movement for change. Related Posts
Weekend Email
Weekened Email By Dr. Claire Muselman Leave Weekends Alone: The Importance of Rest in a Healthy Work Culture The lines between work and rest have blurred in today’s fast-paced work environment. But as Adam Grant eloquently put it, rest is not seen as slacking off in healthy cultures but as essential fuel for sustained energy and productivity. My Journey to Understanding Rest As someone who has navigated the pressures of overachievement and constant work, I have learned that non-stop effort leads to burnout. We often wear our busyness as a badge of honor, but at what cost? My history of broken bones and medical procedures is a testament to the toll that relentless striving can take on our bodies. I still think of it as an adventurous lifestyle… my orthopedic surgeons may disagree. The Wake-Up Call A pivotal moment came when my daughter, witnessing my stress, innocently asked if her friend could spend the night. I snapped at her with no rhyme or reason, and she did NOT deserve that tone; it had nothing to do with her and everything to do with me. It was a Saturday, and I was absorbed in work. This incident was a wake-up call about the example I was setting for her. It is vital to demonstrate that a successful career does not have to come at the expense of personal time and well-being. The Illusion of Urgency Many of us are guilty of checking emails during the weekend and responding to messages that seem urgent but are often not. This habit not only affects our mental health but also sets a precedent for our teams. We teach people how to treat us, and responding to non-urgent work communications during our downtime inadvertently creates an expectation of constant availability. Before you answer, think about the unintentional message you are sending before clicking send. Leading by Example As leaders, we have the power to change this narrative. We can choose when to check emails and how to perceive their urgency. It is crucial to be mindful of the impact of our actions on our team’s well-being. We can use tools like email scheduling to send messages during work hours, respecting our own time and that of our colleagues. Is it really that urgent? No, it is not. Learning from a Wise Leader I once worked under a leader who never sent emails during the evenings or weekends. His approach showed respect for his time and set an example for the rest of the team. This practice allowed for proper rest and recharging and cultivated a culture of care and self-care. His boundaries were a great ‘lead-by-example’ for the rest of the organization. Self-Respect and Setting Boundaries Respecting our time and setting boundaries is a form of self-care. It is essential to lead by example, demonstrating to our teams that rest is not only allowed but encouraged. Refraining from sending weekend emails helps create a healthier, more balanced work environment. It is also a fundamental way to be more productive with the time you set forth to work, being intentional with your time, and showing you are effective at time management. Making a Conscious Choice Let us all make a conscious choice to normalize not sending work-related emails over the weekend. This small change can significantly impact our mental health and overall well-being. By starting this practice, we achieve a healthier work-life balance and a more sustainable work culture. Only you can be the change in this arena. It all starts with you! The Power of Rest Embracing rest and setting boundaries is not just beneficial for our health; it is essential for our productivity and creativity. As we move forward, remember the importance of disconnecting, recharging, and setting an example for healthier work habits. And if you need a more significant reason, aside from your colleagues and organizations paying attention, your children are watching, too. *fur babies included. Related Posts

Grow By Dr. Claire Muselman Time to Sparkle: Embracing the Uncomfortable to Discover Your True Self Life is a continuous journey of reinvention, and here comes 2024 to present us with a unique opportunity to reshape our lives into masterpieces that genuinely represent who we are. Like a potter molds clay, we can recreate and enhance ourselves through our experiences. Then we can add color and, of course, sparkle! The Challenge of Comfort To grow, we must step out of our comfort zones. Within these uncomfortable moments, we find untapped potential and greatness waiting to be nurtured. “And then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom,” Anais Nin once said. Who Are You, Really? We often define ourselves by roles and titles, but it is essential to dig deeper. Who are you at your core? Challenging yourself and stepping out of your routine can reveal aspects of yourself you never knew existed. How do you describe yourself if you remove your position or job title from how you define who you are? Take out your roles and focus on what sparks joy in your world. Need some help? 10 Tips to Discovering Your Authentic Self Read: Expand your mind and perspectives through reading. Just 20 pages a day can lead to 30 books a year, broadening your horizons and stimulating your brain. Turn Off Tech: Disconnect from technology for 24 hours a week. This digital detox allows for emotional and mental resets, helping you become more present and mindful. Find a New Physical Hobby: Movement is crucial for processing information and staying active. Whether dancing, painting, or running, find an activity that fuels your soul and keeps you physically engaged. Seek an Inspiring Mentor: Look for people who have overcome challenges and paved the way in areas where you aspire to grow. Their guidance can be invaluable in stepping out of your comfort zone. Warren Buffet once said, “The best thing I did was to choose the right heroes.” Monitor Your Screen Time: Limit television and social media to live more actively. Use the time you save to explore new experiences, projects, and in-person connections. Change Your Routine: Alter your daily habits to challenge your brain. Start your day with personal reflection, meditation, or reading, setting a productive tone for what lies ahead. Combine Activities for Productivity: Rethink multitasking. Combine activities like walking your dog with listening to an audiobook or podcast to maximize your time effectively. Give Back: Engage in acts of kindness and volunteering. Find activities that align with your passions and contribute positively to your community. Become a Mentor: Share your experiences and insights with others. Public Speaking
Public Speaking By Dr. Claire Muselman Self-Aware: Discovering Ourselves Through Self-Assessments We have all been there, taking those intriguing self-assessments – determining our personality types, conflict styles, love languages, and even which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle we resonate with (I’m Raphael, by the way!). But once we gather this colorful array of self-knowledge, the real question emerges: What do we do with all this insight? The Gift of Self-Awareness Self-awareness is not just about knowing who you are but understanding why you are the way you are. The journey takes you beyond the surface, offering a more profound comprehension of your actions, reactions, and interactions. A Transformational Experience with DISC A leadership team at an organization I am working with recently embarked on this journey by taking the Tony Robbins DISC profile. Witnessing the diverse results and then delving into the dynamics of how the groups work together was nothing short of amazing. It led to discussions on strengths, opportunities, and the crucial ‘why’ behind individual and collective behaviors. It also helped fuel the sense of belonging for team members by establishing a foundation of trust since we hit the root cause of ‘why’ certain behaviors exist. Understanding and Sharing Our Stories In a group of five leaders, this group gained a profound understanding of their colleagues on a new level. These team members realized why certain peers were averse to conflict and how their past experiences shaped this behavior. It is fascinating how a simple personality profile can reveal the intricate stories that define us. Embracing Vulnerability and Honesty Being self-aware also means confronting the hard truths about ourselves. For instance, I discovered my fear of routine and my preference for ‘organized chaos.’ This realization, though challenging, has been a vital part of my growth and has helped me learn to do one of three things when approaching the beautiful element of work: 1. Set a time to get it done, and make a calendar hold to address the task during a specific time slot. 2. Do it now, knowing only some things can be done simultaneously. 3. Let it go. Only some things need a response. The Power of Sharing and Collaboration As this group I worked with shared their stories around the table (with a constant supply of tacos, of course!), it was enlightening to see the team members learn how their unique experiences impact both professional and personal lives. I, known for my colorful creativity and ridiculous sparkle, often bring a different perspective to a predominantly black-and-white environment. This diversity of thought and experience enhances teamwork and fosters trust, an essential element in any successful organization. Growing Through Opposites I have learned to appreciate my strengths and actively seek out those whose strengths complement my weaknesses. Seeing other teams and organizations embrace this to foster collaboration and innovation is fun. This approach has been integral in my personal and professional development, pushing me to engage with people who challenge my ideas and help me build a solid foundation for my initiatives. It can also be an effective means to break down organizational silos that may be present. The Game-Changing Nature of Self-Awareness The journey of self-awareness is indeed an eye-opener and a game-changer. It is about building connections, understanding each other’s fears and strengths, and creating a trusting, collaborative environment. If you’re curious about this journey, why not start with the Tony Robbins DISC assessment? You can access it for free here. Related Posts
The Phoenix
The Phoenix By Dr. Claire Muselman I Am the Phoenix: Embracing Our Evolving Selves As we journey through life, our past selves and experiences often linger in our memories, shaping the narrative of who we are. Owning our current stories and the legacies we are building is crucial. This self-imposed narrative is a journey of self-reflection and self-awareness, a path to understanding and embracing our true selves. Finding Clarity in Silence In moments of quiet, we find clarity. Our past experiences crystallize into wisdom, guiding our current paths and illuminating our future choices. This process helps us to focus on our purpose, nurture our dreams, and awaken the awareness within our souls. The Many Versions of Ourselves We often look back at our past selves – the cheerleader, the scholar, the partner – and sometimes long to return to those times. Understanding that all these past versions contribute to who we are today is vital. They are not just memories but the foundations of our present selves. Imagine all of the past versions of yourself – standing right in front of you – they are all smiling, looking back at you – they are so proud of you! Life as a Retaining Wall Imagine life as a retaining wall, where every experience is a brick that strengthens and shapes the structure. Our past selves are not just remnants but integral parts of our current identity. Every failure has showcased a way to do something different than before, a way we have yet to try. In this lies growth, foundation, and strength to keep moving forward. Embracing the Present The challenge is to focus on the now, appreciating how our past has shaped us into who we are today. Happiness, joy, and self-worth are not destinations to reach; they are part of the ongoing journey of life. The only space of time you have to be happy is right now. The Goal: Never to Arrive but Always Feel at Home My new mantra is never to arrive but always feel at home. Feeling at home means being comfortable with who we are, continuously learning and growing, and enjoying the journey of self-discovery. Our relationship with ourselves is foundational, grounded in self-awareness, introspection, and honesty… with a dose of grace, love, and self-respect. Reflecting on Our Inner Strength We all have faced challenges and adversities. I, too, have had my share of struggles – being a foster child raised by an alcoholic, searching for love and acceptance. These experiences, though challenging, have molded me into who I am today. Embracing the Light Within Instead of dwelling on the darkness of our past, let us focus on the light that shines within us. The evening allows the beauty to shine bright and for us to feel gratitude towards the now. The light of resilience, hope, and strength has brought us to where we are now. The Mirror of Self-Appreciation Look in the mirror and acknowledge the person you are today. Be proud of your journey, your resilience, and your growth. Authenticity starts with being true to yourself. Look yourself in your eyes and smile. Mean it. After all, most smiles are started by another smile. Do yourself a favor. Rising Like a Phoenix Throughout our lives, we embody many versions of ourselves. But one thing remains constant: our ability to rise from the ashes, to transform and grow, no matter the challenges. Like a phoenix, we are reborn from our experiences, more vital and vibrant. As you reflect on your journey, remember that you are not just the sum of your past. You are a dynamic, evolving being, constantly rising and shining. Embrace your story, own your present, and look forward to the endless possibilities. Insert vibrant glitter burst here for your life – because you are uniquely you, and that is incredible! Related Posts
Conquer Your Nerves and Own the Stage – The Ultimate Guide to Public Speaking
Conquer Your Nerves and Own the Stage – The Ultimate Guide to Public Speaking By Dr. Claire Muselman Have you ever found your heart pounding and palms sweaty just thinking about public speaking? Well, you are not alone, and guess what? That is totally okay! Today, we are diving deep into actionable ways you can own that stage like a superstar. The Nervous Jitters: How to Face Them Head-On Plan for the Nerves. Let’s get real: nervousness is a part of life. Instead of fearing those jitters, plan for them. Knowing how nerves manifest in your body can prepare you for the adrenaline rush. Deep breaths, positive affirmations, or a quick backstage dance-off can be your go-to techniques to channel that energy productively. What is mine? Ironically, I drink a Sugar Free RedBull. Yes, seriously and also, I know it is not the healthiest thing to do during these circumstances yet it works for me. Mind Over Body. Your body is a mirror reflecting your mental state. A shaky hand or a trembling voice can give you away. But here is a life-hack—by learning to control your physical self, you can indirectly calm your mind. Try deep breathing exercises or grounding techniques to center yourself before stepping onto the stage. Owning Your Physical Space What is Up with Your Posture? Standing tall not only improves your appearance but also exudes confidence. Good posture can impact how your message is received. Remember to align your feet with your shoulders and avoid slouching. This will help your voice project better and command more attention. Take a deep breath in, roll your shoulders up back and down, then keep them there. Having your collarbone open with a strong stance is a great way to showcase the energy you are bringing into the space you are set to occupy. Hand Check. Our hands are expressive tools. They can emphasize a point or distract from one. Be mindful! Keep your hands relaxed at your sides when you are not using them and make purposeful gestures when you are. This may feel uncomfortable at first; however, it is all in your head. The audience does not think it looks weird when your hands are at your sides. Remember your posture as well! Mic Check. Are you using a microphone during your talk? Will you be using a handheld or lapel mic? Test it out before you speak to ensure you are comfortable with the technology. Consider your outfit—does it have a pocket or a sturdy collar to clip a lapel mic? If you are going to use a lapel mic, you will also need to be aware of where the battery pack needs to slip if you do not have pockets easily assessable. Being prepared eliminates last-minute scrambles. Comfort is Key. Choose your outfit wisely. This is a great time to reflect your personal brand if you are living for color, or in my case, sparkles! That being said, uncomfortable shoes or tight clothing can become a major distraction and not make you feel your very best. Our goal is for you to feel AMAZING! It is your time to shine and showcase your skill. Opt for clothes that make you feel both comfortable and fabulous—because you deserve to feel like a million bucks while sharing your wisdom. Nervous Ticks Be Gone. Identify your nervous habits and devise strategies to avoid them. If you tend to tap your foot, concentrate on grounding your feet. Same if you tend to sway or cross your legs one behind the other while you are speaking. Focus on grounding, posture, and standing tall! Hold onto the podium if you usually twirl your hair or tap your fingers. Being aware of these little things can make a big difference. We do not want anything to distract from your knowledge sharing. Your Voice, Your Power Embrace the Silence. Pauses are golden moments that allow your message to sink in. Fillers like “um” or “ah” dilute your impact. Practice silent pauses to let your words breathe. Taking a deep breathe can help provide a moment of clarity for you and it gives your audience a moment for their mind to process the information you have recently shared. Tune Your Voice. Lowering your vocal range can add a note of authority to your talk. This does not mean you should sound unnatural, but a deeper tone can make people more inclined to listen. Make sure you are focused on diction and enunciation throughout the vocalics of your presentation for crip and clear sounding words. Form Over Content. Reading a script word-for-word may seem safe, but it can also be monotonous. Know your key points well, but do not be afraid to speak naturally and let your personality shine through. While scrips may be helpful, bullet points can also be a way to transform your speech with elements of authenticity, additional information that comes to mind, and a more natural approach to your audience. Putting it All Together No Flipping Allowed. Shuffling through pages is a distraction for both you and your audience. Stick to a single sheet of paper with your key points or use digital cues. The smoother the flow, the better the engagement. You are the only person who knows what information you are about to share. This is all about you. Trust yourself. Visualization. Visualize your success to attract it! Spend a few quiet moments before your talk to close your eyes and imagine a rapt audience hanging on to your every word. You have got this, and you are going to be amazing. I do this the night before speaking events and first thing the morning of to solidify the energy I want to bring into a room. This can not only help set you up for success, but it also gives a positive tone to the day ahead. Remember: YOU GOT THIS! And there we have it, my radiant trailblazers! Armed with these tips, you are ready to
Intro to EI (Emotional Intelligence)
Intro to EI (Emotional Intelligence) By Dr. Claire Muselman Unlocking the Human Connection: An Introduction to Emotional Intelligence By Dr. Claire Muselman Hey there, beautiful souls! Are you tired of the disconnection you feel in your personal and professional relationships? It’s time to talk about a game-changer: Emotional Intelligence (EI). Why Emotional Intelligence is the New Black Have you ever heard of empathic leadership, compassionate leadership, or servant leadership? Emotional Intelligence is like their cool, multidimensional cousin. It is not just a buzzword; it is a necessity. Studies as old as the Hawthorne studies from the 1920s show that the key to employee motivation is not surveillance but the power of human connection. Did You Know? A jaw-dropping 85% of employees feel disengaged at work. On the flip side, companies with engaged employees are 21% more profitable. (Thank you, Gallup for continuing to advance our understanding of employees in the workforce!) How can we turn the tables? Emotional Intelligence 101 First, let’s break it down. EI is essentially your ability to understand and manage your own emotions, as well as those of people around you. It starts with self-awareness, the cornerstone of effective leadership. Imagine if you could manage not just your actions but your reactions. Oh if we could all do this, life would be wonderful, am I right? Why EI Trumps IQ While IQ tests measure things like your ability to understand abstract information, Emotional Intelligence covers the other 80% of your intelligence and success in life. Emotional intelligence is the secret sauce for motivating people and inspiring a sense of self-worth. Quick Exercise Take a moment to reflect on a recent interaction where you felt a strong emotional reaction. Could you identify your emotions? What about the emotions of the other person? Jot these down and ponder what you could do differently next time. I do this at night before I go to bed. I think of a situation I could have handled differently, and I think about the outcome if I shifted my reaction. There is power in learning from our actions in life. The Transformative Power of EI In Personal Relationships: Understand and empathize with your loved ones. In Professional Settings: Be the kind of leader who knows team members’ unique strengths and inspires higher levels of motivation. In Diverse Groups: Navigate different perspectives and cultural backgrounds to foster an inclusive environment. Weekly Challenge For the next seven days, try to identify the emotions you experience throughout the day. Label them and ponder their origins. You might be surprised at what you discover! Wrapping It Up Emotional Intelligence is not just a trend, it is a vital skill for fostering deep connections and creating environments where everyone can thrive. It is up to us to lead by example, starting with leading our own life and then using our influence to demonstrate what is possible. Remember, the world is shaped by your example, not your opinion.
